On Linux version you get the LAN discovery feature and so you can play with a friend by IP address.

Re: How to search multiplayer without steam in Oil Rush game
Hi everyone, recently there is one setup solution which will easily allow the setup of a single Online-lobby for all users. So everyone can join everyone's game. This basically works by using VPN. If you do this, you create a private network with public machines and with people you don't know. You are not behind a Router or a NAT which protects you from almost anything. So if anyone wants to harm the network, he may do that more easily than in the "real" internet. So if you to want join this game make sure your firewall not enabled or running because the firewall do not allow traffic besides Oil Rush via VPN network interface. On Linux, you might want to be sure to have a secure user-password if you have a SSH server running. Use this at your own risk.

With Linux, you should be pretty safe, if your system is not absolutely misconfiguration like running a SSH server with root-login enabled and password 123 or something like that. And even then I think chances are low that you will get hacked. I thought like you in the beginning. But wait until IPv6 is there. IPv6 has no NAT and your computer will be directly connected to the internet 24/7, which is even more of a risk than this solution because the every internet can use it, and not just a all of Oil Rush gamers.

If I understand correctly, there's no less ability than the Steam version, except you can see when your friend is creating a game on Steam ("XYZ" is playing Oil Rush. Click here to join!")? If they have a proper server browser, then I would feel a little left out. Can Linux users play against Windows users.

Re: How to search multiplayer without steam in Oil Rush game
I think a big problem with running Oil Rush multiplayer games is that nobody can see them. On most games you can see full or running games. But Oil Rush doesn't show them in the list. Kind of normal as if you could see it you couldn't do anything with it although as you would see full and running games you actually would know that others or playing. I just can talk for myself but if I'm new to a game and look for a multiplayer game and doesn't see anyone playing I would think that there is none. And if there is none playing the multiplayer would have some problems because else people would play it.

Steam users can use the normal ingame-server browser to find games created by other players. I'd love to see something like that. For now I just use Steam on Windows although, OilRush doesn't run in Wine with steam. Maybe I can get it to work with some special actions. Using steam works as the server browser on a cross platform and even on windows, cross store game is pretty disappointing.

There is no alternative for the moment; we can't afford building another Steam by yourself. You can still play direct matches via IP or LAN cross platform in both cases. Yet open source games can manage a server browser? But I'm not too concerned. I'm fine with bots and campaign with a game like this.
